IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT:
The Infrastructure and Pedestrian Safety Committee will be holding a vote at the March Assembly meeting to request the use of up to $150,000 in TIF funds for a feasibility study and preliminary engineering work on a road diet for Madison Road. This vote will be open to all current dues-paying EWHA members.
The project would cover Madison Road from the MLK – Gilbert Avenue intersection to Cohoon Street in O’Bryonville. It would involve the conversion of Madison into a three lane road with a center two-way turn lane, and consider the installation of protected bike lanes connecting to the Gilbert Avenue Complete Streets Project in Walnut Hills.
If the Assembly approves the vote, the City would then consider holding an official engagement session and additional vote prior to using the funds.
Road diets have been shown to be effective traffic calming interventions on roadways carrying up to 25,000 vehicles per day, according to data from the Federal Highway Administration. The most recent traffic volume data from OKI indicates that Madison Road carries around 13,500 vehicles per day.
Potential benefits include:
- Reduction of rear-end and left-turn crashes due to the dedicated left-turn lane
- Reduced right-angle crashes as side street motorists cross three versus four travel lanes.
- Fewer lanes for pedestrians to cross
- Opportunity to install pedestrian refuge islands, bicycle lanes, on-street parking, or transit stops.
- Traffic calming and more consistent speeds
- A more community-focused, Complete Streets environment that better accommodates the needs of all road user
The Committee welcomes your feedback prior to the vote through social media, the EWHA website, and at the April Assembly meeting.
