When Walnut Hills successfully converted Wm. Howard Taft and E. McMillan St., between May St. and Victory Parkway, back to 2-way use in 2012, residents in East Walnut Hills wondered if the conversion of those streets should continue to Woodburn Ave. and include the 1-way portion of Woodburn Ave. between Wm. Howard Taft and E. McMillan.
Residents and business owners met with the City to discuss extending the 2-way into East Walnut Hills, but those talks were put on hold in 2015 when the Anthem property sold, until the City and the neighborhood knew what would become of the 7-acre site bounded by all of the streets considered for conversion. In March 2017, with a development plan in the works for residential housing on the Anthem site, a Stakeholder Committee was formed to not only guide the Anthem development process, but to also reboot talks with the City about 2-way streets.
The 25-member Stakeholder Committee is made up of residents, property owners and business owners, most of whom would be directly affected by any proposed changes. The group met for over a year with representatives of the City Department of Transportation Engineering (DOTE), City Planning, and the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to devise a 2-way plan to best meet the stated goals of increasing safety, the pedestrian-friendliness of the neighborhood and connections to the business district, while considering parking issues and the changes in traffic flow on some of the residential side streets.
Ultimately, this proposed plan would restore the original 2-way street design along these important neighborhood arterials from May St. to the west all the way to Columbia Parkway in the east, as well as return the entirety of Woodburn Avenue to 2-way use. You can view a schematic design of the Proposed 2-Way Street Conversion, along with a detailed summary and existing conditions. The neighborhood will have a chance to discuss and vote on the plan early in 2019. If approved by the neighborhood, the plan will also need City Council approval.
